Noise Pollution: Neuroot, OOC, Suuns, Hedgehog, Jungle Mico Project, Ari Hoenig Trio

June continues to strike gold music wise – offering one dizzyingly satisfying gig after another. It’s a buyers market out there – with enough leeway to sneak in three or four shows in one night. So shake it up a bit, explore some new sounds and treat yourself to some summer tunes. 
 

Friday, Jun 22 

Neuroot (Netherlands), The Demonstrators, Hang Nail, Strike on the South Wall at School
Founded in the Netherlands during the golden age of hardcore punk in the 1980's, Neuroot has been going strong since 1982. Their brutal dbeat style with distorted bass in conjunction with strong musicianship made the fourpiece standout and jump to the forefront of the genre. Catch them at School Bar alongside street punks The Demonstrators, grunge hard rockers Hang Nail, as well as old-school hardcore ska trio Strike on the South Wall. RMB 80

 

Steely Heart, Discord, Unregenerate Blood, Never Before at Yue Space 
16 years ago, a group of young ruffians met at a punk show in Wudaokou and became Last Chance of Youth. Part of the ‘second wave of punk,’ hear a tribute to them from acts like street punks Discord, hardcore outfit Unregenerate Blood, sludge metal folks Never Before, and smashed electro punks Steely Heart. OOC, Shuang Zi, Swarrm, Li Wen Qi at Mao Livehouse
Hard rock veterans OOC aka Out of Control, led by the charismatic and appropriately old-school vocalist Cheng Chen, has maintained a legion of fans over the years, from Cui Jian to Zhou Ren. They swing through Wukesong as part of their nationwide tour with support from their friends including Beijing rapper Shuangzi, technical metal monsters Swarrm and singer-songwriters Li Wenqi. SHAS, Scream Maker, The Last Resort at Temple
The Beijing Underground Summer Music Days which aims at showing the diversity of music and culture in the Chinese capital continues its residency at Temple Bar with a heavy, noise making evening featuring sludge metal outfit SHAS, Scream Maker from Poland, and hardcore ruffians The Last Resort. 3Mi at Omni Space
Neither folk nor rock nor pop, the singer-songwriter Zhang San Mi, something of an overnight sensation in the folk music scene, presents her dream pop-infused tunes this evening at Omni Space. RMB 100  

Zhou Zilong, J Woods, Seventy, L-Force at Hot Cat Club
Head down to Fangjia Hutong for the ‘Support da Kids in West Rap Party’ which where toys, comics, and other collections with be donated in the name of children along with other hip-hop activities. FREE 

Eric Allen, Great Buffalo Blues, Joy Stuhr, Echo Flower at Jianghu
Catch an array of expat artists present the sounds and tunes of the heartland of America, from blues singer Eric Allen, three-piece electric blues band Great Buffalo Blues, multi-instrumentalist Joy Stuhr, and psychedelic R&B duo Echo Flower. RMB 60

Monesque and The White Russian, Mr. XX at 69 Café 
Monesque and The White Russian are an original indie pop guitar duet made up of a Dutch-Australian and a Russian. Mr. XX is an indie folk duo from Mainland China. Catch them both at Wudaokou tonight. RMB 60

 

Noise Jelly, Hei Yang, Zhang Ziwei, Yu Zijun at 13 Club 
13 Club invites a mix of hard rockers and singer-songwriters to Wudaokou to provide a hearty intimate evening of tunes to students. RMB 80

Templo de Samba at Caravan
Templo de Samba will be on hand to infuse the World Cup Brazil vs. Costa Rica game with the enchanting sounds of a Pagode – Bossanova, samba, and Latin flavors – it's gonna get mighty festive folks. RMB 80

 

Tavey Lean and The Solid Gold Dream Machine at DDC
Audience favorites, Tavey Lean and The Solid Gold Dream Machine bring their impressive repertoire of classic soul, RnB, three-piece horn section, rock 'n' roll fun to DDC. FREE 

TYZ, Jamie, Rudi, Xie Yuchi at Mogu Space 
South African singer-songwriter TYZ joins Rudi (of Tydi Knots), Jamie, and Xie Yuchi, a classically-trained guitar player adept at both classical and flamenco styles this evening in Xizhimen. RMB 66

Trio Sol at La Plantation 
From Russia with love comes the cello, violin, and piano collaboration between the award-winning Jacob Shaw, Marisol Lee and Young Kwon Choi presenting some high-end Russian chamber music. RMB 200 

Monster in a Bottle at Pink Moon
The Changsha folk singer returns to Beijing with his latest album of stripped down punk-tinted folk ballads. RMB 80 

The Hunters at Modernista
Beijing’s hottest crowd-pleasing outfit One of Beijing’s best foreign cover bands The Hunters combine old school funk, soul, and rock classics with intoxicating delivery. FREE

Simon Schirru Quartet at The Bricks
Enjoy original Jazz tunes by the Italian guitarist Simone Schirru and his crew which features Nathaniel Gao on sax, Zhang Ke on bass, and Xiao Dou on drums. FREE

Suuns (US), Fishdoll at Yue Space 
Seamlessly blending the programmed and played – the Canadian quartet Suuns present their brand of dark, melancholy electro-rock that’s bewitching, radiant and eerily beautiful that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Embracing the space and silences alongside the cold sensuality, it’s new wave post-punk as much as it’s organic electronica and psychedelic indie rock. Simply put, it’s its own island. Support from sultry, mischievously bubbly jazz-electronic outfit Fishdoll. RMB 167

Hedgehog, Beng, Silent Speech at Omni Space 
Hedgehog, one of China’s most influential indie rock bands, return with their first release in four years, and quite possibly their last. Known for crafting lyrically rich, melody-driven indie rock anthems that speak to an entire generation their latest is the band at peak form dabbling in pop delights to grunge breakouts, enraged social critics, boisterous party animals and for once young adults starting their own families. Did I mentioned – sold out!

Peace and Wave, Ghetto Blaster at School 
Five-piece contemporary blues-funk outfit Peace and Wave have been on a slow rise to the top of the underground scene in Shanghai since they formed in 2015. Having opened for the likes of Casino Demon, Chengdu's Mosaic, Click#15, and many other touring bands that trek through Shanghai, word of mouth about this five-piece has spread all across China. They swing through as apart of a special summer showcase with their new EP in tow. RMB 69

 

Great Buffalo Blues, Sid Silwal, Parakeet, Uncle Hu at Solona
The Fête De La Musique party continues into the weekend with a family-friendly outing at Chaoyangmen’s esteemed Solana digs - with an upbeat afternoon lineup of fun with sets from indie folk rockers Uncle Hu, blues rippers Great Buffalo Blues, singer-songwriter Sid Silwal, and jazz poppers Parakeet. 2pm. Penicillin, Next Door Band, Poshangcun, Finger Family, Laisee, Panda Eyes at Yugong Yishan 
Some heavy hitters this night at Yugong Yishan – not in terms of musical styles, but in terms of mainstream appeal. From the J-pop punk of Finger Family to the easy-going folk-pop charm of Poshangcun, and the Britrock swooning of Penicillin, these are bands that will have audiences in droves going bananas. [CANCELED] Azure Ray (US) at Tango
American dream pop duo Azure Ray made up of artists Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink has been combining elements of folk, pop, and light electronica for since 2001, refining their sound more and more with each outing,  leaning more in the sleek electronic as of recent. The two will stop by Tango this evening. RMB 480

Jungle Mico Project at DDC
The live drum ’n’ bass band – who always throw a wild 'n’ out show – return this Saturday to DDC – led by the renowned electronic drummer Mico, the ensemble mix elements of dubstep, breakbeats, deep techno, and more all performed live on real instruments in real time’. FREE 

Wang Juan, Zhang Qianqian, Shi Xiaofei at BSP Livehouse 
Neo-folk legend Wang Juan, one of the folk scene’s most pristine and celebrated singer-songwriters since her emergence onto the scene at the beginning of the century joins fellow long-standing Beijing folk songstress Zhang Qianqian as well as contemporary folk singer-songwriter Shi Xiaofei. Expect a packed house as three of the scene’s most beloved take the stage. RMB 100

Ember Swift at Modernista 
Known for her unique, jazz-influenced guitar playing and elastic vocals, the Canadian born Beijing based singer-songwriter Ember Swift has been a fixture of the Beijing music scene for years releasing an array of LPs and melding Mandarin, English, and French into one intoxicating package. Catch her and her full band tonight at Modernista. FREE

Ari Hoenig Trio at Blue Note 
Band leader, educator, and collaborator Ari Hoenig draws inspiration from the transformative power of New York City. He appears at Blue Note Beijing with pianist Eden Ladin and bassist Or Bareket for a night of Big Apple jazz. RMB 360

Nancy Jenkinson Brown Quartet at Bricks

Formed by two of Beijing’s hardest working musicians, Boxuan (of Nova Heart) on sitar and Yanlo (of Queen Sea Big Shark/Casino Demon) on synths, plus an array of musical accompaniment on stage (machines, bass, drums), Cosmic Project create world music with electro-experimental-classical vibes using a multitude of different instruments. They join an array of guest artists for their set including among others Bayan Dalai, LST, Zhang Jie, Ming Xu, and Mao Mao. RMB 80

Rhonda, Acid Accident, Miracle Pot at Temple
