More Than Art, More Than Books, More Than Art Books: abC Art Book Fair Beijing Takes Over Today Art Museum, Jul 9-11

Back for its sixth installment this weekend, abC Art Book Fair is – Jul 9-11 at Today Art Museum – is bringing together a wildly diverse group of artists, publishers, bookmakers, musicians, and writers from China and abroad. From independent vendors showcasing their latest titles to large-scale installation works, traditional gallery shows, a feminist reading room, live performances, paper production workshops, and cooperative exhibits with international partners from Italy and the Netherlands, abC Art Book Fair is arguably the capital’s finest celebration of some of the most innovative makers working in one of the world's oldest traditions – the printed word.

This year, abC Art Book Fair’s theme will center around the “common street,” a richly varied, multi-media analysis of urban landscapes and life as well as street culture and aesthetics, revealing the decidedly extraordinary in the otherwise ordinary environments that surround us. At a time when so much art speaks to the decay of our cities, increasing human isolation and alienation within them, and the gradual disappearance of the natural world, abC Art Book Fair’s “common street” seeks to highlight the unique qualities and characteristics of shared space and public facilities. A series of flagship exhibits to reflect this theme comes courtesy of A Day Studio and new media artist Macro Hong, who is quite literally taking everyday objects from the street such as traffic cones and exit signs to create “interactive lighting and sound installations, which will flash throughout the exhibition to remind the audience of the dynamic glow of the city.”

At the nearby MuYun Art Space, abC is teaming up with Chinese art duo Zhang Zeyangping and Wu Yumo, aka AnyOne, to produce Sound Nomads, a comprehensive, interactive sonic and visual installation that combines a dizzying array of mediums courtesy of artists from China, Japan, Italy, and the US, which seek to elevate the mere act of walking into a “state of survival and creation.” Likewise, from 5-6pm on Jul 10, MuYun’s courtyard will host a live performance by Macro and AFTMOON in an effort to bring the entire exhibit to life.

If it’s readings you’re after, AP Project will be hosting a reading room at Between Space for art and feminism under the banner “Vai Pure!” – or “Please Leave!” – a slogan coined by Italian feminist theorist Carla Longi. Aside from a bonafide library of books from publishers such as Rivolta Femminile, Mousse Publishing, Gusher, Broccoli, and BETWEENtheLINES, as well as archival collections provided by Milan Women’s Library and Fondazione Elvira Badaracco, there will also be a series of readings each day of the event.

Meanwhile, there will be a ridiculous amount of indie book-related booths and events including an exhibition co-curated by abC and Sounds About Riso, which will see four Chinese bookmakers – Zhong Yu, Huang Teng, Zheng Chun, and Wei Zheng – temporarily move their studios to the “Resident Studio” section on the second floor of Today Art Museum. Likewise, there will be a ton of other book producers demonstrating various aspects of the book production process such as Artron Art Printing, who will be sharing traditional and modern printing technologies, letterpress printing aficionados presswow, and abC’s official paper partner, Condolee Paper.

Needless to say, we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what is sure to be an overwhelming – in all the best ways – three days of art, music, creativity, and downright DIY charm.

The sixth annual abC Art Book Fair takes place in and around Today Art Museum from July 9-11. Single-day tickets run RMB 80, and can be purchased following the mini-program here.

Well, yeah, personally I'll celebrate public facilities and shared space over the old-growth forest and mountains any day. Like Huysman's Des Esseintes tells us, boring old bawd nature has had her day. Time for artificiality to have a turn.

But, really, the writer here is to be complimented on looking at the bright side. I mean, when served a s*** sandwich you can gripe about the taste, OR you can be happy that this way you won't gain weight. Right?

There's only 800 godzillion acres of empty land in Canada, and in pretty much everywhere. A poor soul can live anywhere of them if they have the wits to live there, which ain't really that hard. But oh no. Ya all gotta live in boxes, in cities, so's we can count the cattle, give em their food, have em take ther medcine, give us their milk. moo.

The Beast called "Development" eats slow, but he eats all. Because it's all for sale. Sodoms-Afflinge bustin' butt to make money for the very few. The few who have it all anyway.

`slow' is an adjective, `eats' is a verb. This is like milk and meat, for those of Hasidic persuasion.

I must say, that picture of the two sitting by oceanside with brazier burning between them is a very cool picture. I keep looking at it. Something about it grabs me.
