Walk for Rescues – Help Raise Money for Beijing Animal Rescue Charity Furry Tales

Calling all animal lovers! This week on Oct 14, the Grade 7 and 8 students from The International Montessori School of Beijing (MSB) will be doing a sponsored walk to raise money for Beijing-based charity Furry Tales. Now, whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, one thing both sides can agree on is that every cat and dog deserves to find their forever home, and that’s just what Furry Tales works to do: provide forever homes for our furry friends.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Furry Tales is an animal rescue group that was founded in Beijing earlier this year. It was started by Elizabeth Rodewald and Sorcha Moore-Smith. They help rescue abandoned and abused dogs and cats in Beijing and then help get them fostered and adopted. You can find out more about the charity in this interview our sister site jingkids International did with the two founders earlier this year.

The sponsored walk has been organized by Grade 7/8 Lead Teacher Kristen Fraser. On where the idea for the sponsored walk came from, she tells me: “We have a class called Service Learning at MSB, which...combines an academic curriculum with community service and problem-solving. I thought it would be a great opportunity for the students to use this time to make a real difference for a local charity in Beijing. As we are limited to on-campus events, the students and I came up with this idea together after some brainstorming.”

Out of the many local charities in Beijing, Fraser said they decided on Furry Tales because “I am an animal lover and have two rescue dogs myself, so I wanted to give back to an organization related to this. Some of my students also have rescue animals so it was a cause close to all our hearts.”

The walk will see Fraser and the students first doing 2km around the MSB campus running track followed by a further 1km around campus, but with a furry twist! Both Fraser and the students will all be dressed up in animal costumes in support of Furry Tales.

Fraser and the students are hoping to raise at least RMB 5,000 for Furry Tales through the walk. To pledge a donation for the walk you can scan the QR code in the poster below to add Fraser and be added to the sponsor form.

Now, this isn’t the only charity fundraising event that Fraser and her class have planned. When asked about future events, she says: “We would like to continue to support Furry Tales as it is a local charity, and we can see the real difference it makes in Beijing. For our next fundraising event we are thinking of doing an Art Auction.”

It’s such a great thing to see kids here in Beijing being so proactive in raising money for a local charity, so be sure to scan the QR code and make a pledge!
