Agenda September 10th to September 23rd

The latest Agenda features an interview with the chef from one of Beijing’s most consistently exciting restaurants – Jordi Villegas Serra from Blu Lobster. Jordi tells us about how his cooking career started early in life, what’s on his menu right now and chooses some of his favorite Beijing restaurants.

New openings in Try These Restaurants include:
Swagat – Indian outlet for Shuangjing-dwellers;
Kuki
– Another Shuangjing restaurant – this one’s Japanese;
Macau Taste
– New restaurant in the Village offering (surprise, surprise) a taste of Macau

In Spotlights: M on the Bund is a notable Shanghai success story. Now owner Michelle Garnaut tells us about Capital M, her new Beijing venue (open September 15); DJ El-Mar sets up September 19’s Great Aircraft Carrier Party in Tianjin; restaurant tips from Hilton Doubletree’s F&B Director Barclay Doring; and Yin and Yang Yoga teacher Simon Low gets us in the mood for his three-day visit to Yoga Yard (Sep 25-27).

September is the traditional season for new expat arrivals in Beijing, so in our Lists, we round up reliable stores for all your home decor needs, as well as the city’s best student bars. We’ve also got lists of great noodle restaurants and lunchtime meal deals. Last but not least, you’ll find 14 days of great events in our Day-by-Day event listings.

Want to be an agenda intern?
We’re recruiting interns to join our small team for a minimum of three months. Ideally, you’ll have some knowledge of Beijing dining and nightlife and previous experience in journalism. If not, you’ll at least be sharp, witty and curious, self-motivated and able to take initiative and bring ideas to our magazine as it continues to grow. Excellent English speaking and writing skills are essential. Chinese language skills are a bonus, but not essential. E-mail your resume to iainshaw@agendabeijing.com

TBJ September: Art is as Art Does

How much do you really know about Beijing’s art scene? If a lot, then you’re aware this month is the 30th anniversary of Chinese contemporary art, and that the 798 Beijing Biennale 2009 is going on right now (until Sep 12). To those who know maybe not so much, we offer you this month’s Cover Feature: a crash course in Chinese Art 101, and an introduction to eight of its biggest names (Huang Rui, Zhang Xiaogang, Aniwar and more).

We’ve also got reflections from artist Maomao, and Fashion Five-Oh offers commentary on tattoos. And where would Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, M.C. Escher and Andy Warhol party? PLA takes a wild guess. Writer David Quammen, before opening The Bookworm’s science festival, explains why humans are “weedy,” then our new Ecology section breaks down genetically modified rice and how to eat like a locavore.

Take 5 gallery shops, bars to ogle, arts of the martial and places to have your cake, then say happy birthday to Acupuncture, Yugong Yishan and Plasteredtshirts.com. Plus: up-and-coming blues band Wu & The Side Effects, Zhang Ziyi on Revenge, The Merchants of Bollywood, and – as always – all the latest shop, restaurant and bar openings around town.

All that and more in the September issue of the Beijinger!
