Agenda July 22-August 4: Pass the Mic

A hot croon in a cool, air-conditioned room can be of the most exhilarating and therapeutic ways to spend a summer night (or any night, or day). Check out our list of some of Beijing's finest KTV venues in the new issue of Agenda – out now and available around town.

This issue’s Spotlight features shine on another bumper crop of Beijing luminaries like Pie purveyors Mark Huetsch and Liang Wang of Pie House, drum & bass diva DJ Blackie of the Syndicate and ChinaSMACK blog founder Fauna. Also featured in this issue are Vietnamese sandwich master Jun Trinh, felt designer Bill Yen of MRKT, and Wang Lei, the first Chinese woman to reach the Seven Summits and the Two Poles. In The List, this issue sorts you out with a roundup of Wudaokou’s best shopping spots.

Along with two fabulous weeks of events, a fresh batch of Try These venue recommendations and much more, this is another can’t-miss issue.

Agenda Jul 8-21: Make a Splash at the City’s Best Pools

The dog days of summer are in full effect, so now is the perfect time to cool off at the pool – check out our list of the city’s best swimming spots in the latest issue of Agenda.

Or, if you’re in the mood for bread, buns, cakes and more, our list of Beijing’s best bakeries is sure to satisfy. We also talk architecture and design with Sanlitun Soho architect Kengo Kuma and Shauna Liu, the designer and proprietor of 798’s hip luxury Yi Hotel. Caffeine fiends should read up on Lawrence Chen, owner of the Pingod 22 International Art Street café Unconditional Love Coffee and quite possibly Beijing’s best barista, and Dr Philip Brooks tells us about Beijing’s first Western-standard oncology clinic, the New Hope Center at the Beijing United Family Hospital.

Finally, we’d like to make note of and apologize for an error in the Day-by-Day events section, where Monday, July 12 and Tuesday, July 13 were misprinted as Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. A corrected PDF version of the events section is below.

the Beijinger - July 2010: The Music Issue

Music is a broad church. Nowhere more so than in Beijing. The capital has a longstanding musical history of its own but perhaps it has never been as interesting as the present. Beijing is a big deal. Local bands are making international headway, international acts are coming to Beijing ever more regularly and there is a live music scene that's more layered than ever. Our Cover Feature this month highlights some of the people for whom Beijing is the land of musical opportunity: the out-of-towners - both Chinese and foreign - who are making noise.

Elsewhere in the July issue of the Beijinger we've got an interview with the soulful lothario that is Usher Raymond IV, we've an interview with skating and videogame legend Tony Hawk and one with author Deborah Fallows. There's features on art from the DPRK, Da Dong doing more than duck and the Library Project's literacy drive. Add in all of the usual elements into the mix - the best new restaurants, bars and shops - plus our regular features and you've got yourself a copy of July's the Beijinger. Get it at one of our regular distribution spots or download it in PDF format below.
