Party Like it's 1949 - Preview of the Oct 1 Celebration

The parade for the 60th anniversary of the PRC this October 1 is shaping up to be bigger than Ben Hur – or at least the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. CNReviews has provided a good round up of recent coverage in the local press, while the naughty New Yorker has posted some surprisingly dull pirate footage of students rehearsing for the parade – though it’s displayed via YouTube so most Beijingers won’t be able to see it.

In addition to a keynote address by President Hu Jintao, Xinhua says the military parade will feature five types of missiles never seen before in public – including “nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.” Yikes.

Fear not however – the proud display of long, sleek, steely weaponry is simply to illustrate China’s proud safeguarding of “world and regional peace and stability.”

CNReview enthuses the parade is “going to be something fun to watch,” though it seems unlikely Beijingers will be able to see anything other than telecasts. One friend living in the vicinity of the parade has already been informed he will not be permitted to leave his home or even open a window on the big day. According to CNReview, travel agents have also been told “Beijing is not open for tours during the first few days of the October 1-7 holiday.” Seems there will be no gatecrashers at this party.

Stay home and watch TV, you will get a much better view!! Then thinking of getting out of Beijing the next day for some fun. Transportation on Day Of won't be easy!

Well, where are you supposed to watch the parade? I mean, I'm assuming that since it's a *parade* there is some intent for it to be seen by the public....

I live not too far away, haven't heard about any restrictions. Is there any point in trying to get into the neighbourhood day of?

Chang'an street won't be open to the public, which means ppl can't go and watch the parade. So where to see those missiles?

Oh come on, but what about all those missiles you've never seen before?

Register and post your own events on the beijinger website.

Still haven't managed to make any plans for the week -- this is shaping up to be one long, boring holiday ...
