Playlist: Wu Ningyue of Buyi

“Rock ‘N’ Roll on the New Long March” by Cui Jian.
Totally overturned my understanding of music. The first time I heard it, I was so excited I didn’t even realize it was sung in Chinese.

“A Dream Return to Tang Dynasty” by Tang Dynasty.
Grand and magnificent, beautiful high pitches, perfect production. It made me like metal.

“Disappear” (消失) by Wild Child.
If there’s one Chinese band that can be described as great, it’s them. Their contribution to folk music is incomparable. Most folk musicians in Beijing have received help from them.

“White Temple” (白庙) by Zhao Yiran.
Truly embodies the soul of northwestern folk songs. It finds joy in sorrow, wild and sincere. It’s full of the taste of yellow earth.

Buyi plays at Jiang Hu Liveshow Bar on Feb 17.
