2013 Feb 17 Time To Represent: Vote In The Reader Restaurant Awards

The whole point of our Reader Restaurant Awards is that we want to be able to tell you what the public recommends. We use what psephologists call a First Past The Post system, which means that the winner is the nominee with the most votes in that category. This is all well and good, but as any electoral reform advocate can tell you, it doesn't tell the whole story ...

We also want you to know what the different groups among our readership think. That’s why we ask you for personal information such as age, time spent in Beijing and where you’re from. We need that so we can make a more specific and informative Reader Restaurant Awards for you. Let’s face it who doesn’t want to know the answer to questions such as:
- Do Beijing’s Italians really think Annie’s is the best Italian restaurant?
- Where do the Americans think is the best pizza in the city?
- Where do Chinese readers think has good service?
- What good eats make the good folks of Haidian leave the district?
We sure want to know. In fact, we can't wait to find out but in order to do so we need you to vote. It's time to step up and represent, Beijing.
Don't forget to vote here.

What's Good in the Hutong? Vote on Your Dining Favorites

Brooklyn : New York :: ____ : Beijing
a) Sanlitun
b) Qianmen
c) GulouThat might give you unpleasant memories of standardized tests, but the answer should jump quickly to mind. Gulou, of course. It's a comparison that makes sense in many ways – the neighborhood vibe, hip bars amidst small local shops, gentrification – and I've heard it bandied about in town often. But the New York Times is "discovering" it, finally, and had their wits about them to scoop up a profile on Gulou for their Travel section's "Heads Up" column.
Awards Season Hoopla: Make Your Vote Count

Though awards season in the rest of the world is winding down, here in Beijing, it's just beginning.
Having cast my vote for the past several years, this is the first year I've had the pleasure of helping to organize the Beijinger's Reader Restaurant Awards. So, as your new Dining Editor, I'm excited to see where you, dear Beijingers, choose for your "Best of's" in our tenth annual Reader Restaurant Awards. While we don't expect you to vote in every category, I've found there's always reason to celebrate in this city, and I expect you have strong ideas to share on where best to revel in Beijing. Look below to see our nominees for "Best Place for Celebration," and write in your own unlisted underdog on the ballot if you don't see your favorite spot featured.

Re: Time To Represent: Vote In The Reader Restaurant Awards
Once again, the lists are just awful and plagued by bubble-dwellers who seem to think that food only exists in sanlitun and chefs are only foreign. Same horrible places that have zero value over and over and over again. I make it a point to just flat out avoid any place that wins your "awards", as they are basically meaningless and only designate places that laowai love to throw away money at horrible food.

Re: Time To Represent: Vote In The Reader Restaurant Awards
Scion,
How about telling us some of the places you'd like to see nominated?
I'm sure there are some people who might feel they're stuck in the "bubble" you seem to have such scorn for, and who would appreciate a few suggestions.
