The Beijinger 10th RBCA: Meet the Personalities – Carl Setzer

As voting opens in this year's the Beijinger Reader Bar & Club Awards, we look to the eight nominees for the Personality of the Year award, asking them for their take on the best the city has to offer.

Next up, a rapid-fire chat with Carl Setzer, manager at Great Leap Brewing.

On the Best Cafe
Cafe Flatwhite at 798.

On the Best for Students
Lush.

On the Best Hutong Bar
Is it low class to say ourselves?

On the Best for Outdoor Drinking
I don't wanna sound like a dick and vote for myself, so can we just skip over the ones we're nominated for?

On the Best Rooftop
Nola has the best rooftop in town.

On the Best Sanlitun
I like Cantina Agave.

On the Best Live Music Venue
I guess Yugong Yishan.

On the Best Manager
Karl Long.

On the Best for Impressing Visitors
Usually I take them to Dali Courtyard, but I like Xiu, too.

On the Bar of the Year
I guess a lot of people like Janes and Hooch.

On the Best New Bar
Janes and Hooch.

On the Best Sports Bar
Is Paddy O'Shea's nominated for that shit? Yeah, I guess it's there.

On the Best Cocktails
Apothecary.

On the Best Quiz Night
The one at The Brick used to be pretty cool, do they still do that?

On the Best Shuangjing
The Brick.

On the Best Place to Play Pool
Is Black Sun still open? I guess I'll say Black Sun.

On the Most Beautiful People
Best place to make Carl feel uncomfortable, erm ...

On the Friendliest Bar/Crowd
There's not really an overabundance of really friendly places in town. Andy at Union is pretty nice – I'll say there.

On the Best Hidden Gem
Usually when there's a place that is worth going to, people know about it all at once. There's that new place, The Fort, but I haven't been there yet.

On the Party of the Year
The Irish Ball is pretty fun.
