Burger Brief: Blue Frog's Montana Burger

Burger Brief takes a look at some of the vendors taking part in tomorrow's (Aug 15) Burger Cup Launch Party, as well as the top seeds in this year's the Beijinger Burger Cup ranking

Name: Hill Hong
Nationality: China
Number of years in Beijing: 36 (Native Beijinger)
Venue/restaurant: blue frog, Sanlitun
Name of signature burger: the Montana

Tell us about your signature burger. What makes it the best burger in Beijing?
The Montana, like all blue frog burgers, is made with a juicy patty made of 100 percent Australian beef, and comes with onion rings, cheddar cheese, a few strips of bacon, and barbecue sauce. I think it’s the best burger in the city because not only is it incredibly tasty, it’s also symbolic of blue frog’s origins. Our founder, Bob, is from Montana, and so he created this burger with his homeland in mind. It’s also huge – I’ve never felt anything less than stuffed after noshing down on one of these bad boys!

What does the burger come with (e.g. fries, salad etc.)?
The Montana is served with French fries, though you can swap them for sweet potato fries if you fancy something a little bit healthier. All our burgers come with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions, too.

What drink from your menu goes best with the burger?
With a filling burger like the Montana, you want something light and refreshing. I usually go for a blue frog Mango Margarita. It’s Omeca Gold, triple sec, lemon syrup, and a dash of mango puree – something nice and sweet to offset the saltiness of the bacon. It’s a great combo.

What other burgers do you have on the menu?
We have 11 other burgers, so a lot of variety. The Mile High is a popular one – it’s a pan-fried double beef burger wrapped with bacon, cheddar cheese, and spicy mayo on a sesame bun. Pretty massive, so I’m always impressed when a plate comes back empty! The Gourmet burger is also pretty special: avocado, chili and lime cheddar cheese, mustard seed aioli, baby pepperoncini, Parma ham, and a dollop of sweet chili jelly, served on ciabatta bread. We also have the Lamb Burger, the Spicy Chicken, a couple of great vegetarian options – there’s definitely something for everyone.

Do you have any burger deals or specials?
Indeed we do! Every Monday, from 4pm until late, all burgers are buy-one-get-one-free, as long as you buy a drink as well. We also have Happy Hour every day from 4pm until 8pm, when all standard drinks (including cocktails!) are buy-one-get-one-free refill. On top of this, every Thursday is Thirsty Thursday at blue frog, when mojitos and margaritas are buy-one-get-one-free refill all night long – so you can definitely get your fill of Mango Margarita!

What was the best burger you’ve ever had, in Beijing or otherwise?
That’s a tricky question, as I’ve had a lot of excellent burgers in my time! However, one that really stood out for me was the Mexican Burger at Let’s Burger in Beijing. It’s quite a pricey place, but they make up for it with their portion sizes – plus the ‘serve yourself’ sauce bar is really cool touch!

Maybe it's in purpose, people will try this burger thinking it's the best, then realize it's bad so never got there again and go to Blue frog instead Blum 3

(I've never try that one so I don't know)

Interesting..

I like blue frog ..the burgers are good. I was even thinking about going after reading this. But to pick the mexican burger from let's burger as the best ever is crazy!

I have tried the mexican pile of garbage from let's burger. It was so bad I still remember it after a few years ago..half warm canned chili on a massive bun with a well over cooked tiny burger patty for 100rmb! I have never been back..

Its insane to work at a place that makes good burgers and pick a nasty over priced piece of slop as the best burger ever!

Who is this guy?
