Burger Brief: Fatboy's Hefty Offerings Boast Variety and Flavor in Spades

Burger Brief takes a look at some of the attendees of the Beijinger's 2017 Burger Cup. This time we visited Singapore-based chain Fatboy's The Burger Bar. Don't forget to vote in the latest round of the Burger Cup, helping to push through your favorite from this year's Sweet 16.

We love a restaurant that wears its heart on its sleeve or, in this case, its name because you'll certainly be packing on the pounds if you make a habit of dining regularly on Fatboy's hefty handcrafted burgers. Fatboy's was founded in Singapore in 2009 by brothers Bernie and Kennie Tay and has since beefed up to 22 outlets around Asia, including two in Beijing, the first just north of The Place and the second in the Topwin Center. Fatboy's is inspired by 1950s mom 'n' pop burger and shake joints, decked out in a classic black and white check color scheme and playing a soundtrack of retro hits.

Their signature burger is the Fat Basterd (RMB 118, pictured in lead blog image), a hulking behemoth of a sandwich stuffed with two beef chuck patties, bacon, cheese, and a fried egg, and named after the notorious villain from the Austin Powers movies (with a nod to Inglorious Basterds). You'd think you'd need to approach a burger like this with a knife and fork, what with all the sauce and runny egg yolk, but in fact, the close texture of the beef patty makes it stand up pretty well. The Wimpy burger (RMB 88), pictured below, is a one-patty version of the Fat Basterd for those of us – i.e. me - who don't quite have the stomach for a double burger at lunch.

The Fat Basterd is just one of nearly 20 a la carte menu options that showcase the restaurant's creative combinations and quality ingredients, with something for just about everyone. So, for example, spice lovers can try the Burgatory Burger (RMB 80), topped with spicy chili queso and jalapeños, while health-conscious diners might want to opt for the Holy Caesar (RMB 68), a grilled chicken fillet topped with romaine lettuce and Caesar dressing. Traditionalists – or those that want to get really wild with their combinations – can design their own burger, with your choice of bun, patty (beef, lamb, pork, or grilled chicken), more than 20 add-ons, and 14 sauces.

A Fatboy's burger might not be the cheapest in town but you certainly won't come away hungry (all burgers come with an order of fries). Oh, and don't forget to top off your meal with a root beer float (RMB 38). Food coma in 5, 4, 3, ...

The Beijinger 2017 Burger Cup is sponsored by Bon App, Job-in, and Left Hand App. Vote now to give your favorite burger a much-needed push to the finish line!

Fatboys is fantastic! My only gripe is that it's quite pricey, but everything on offer is tasty enough to make it well worth an indulgence shortly after payday
