This Week in Health and Fitness: Breast Cancer Awareness Talk at BJU, INN Medical Q&A Gathering

This week's events mostly focus on staying aware of what's going on with your body so you can stay healthy in the long term.

First, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to help spread some insight about the illness, Beijing United Family Hospital is hosting an educational talk on Thursday, Sept. 21, to discuss breast cancer detection and diagnosis. During the talk, they will discuss breast cancer detection and diagnosis and participants will hear from a breast cancer survivor who will talk about her experience with battling breast cancer as an expat in Beijing. There will also be a practical session where attendants will learn how to do self-checks at home. Light refreshments will be available throughout the event. Register via this link and you will be sent an email invitation. By registering, you will also be entered into a raffle. Prizes include a Well-Woman Care Rose Package from Beijing United Family Hospital (a comprehensive health assessment for women that includes a breast cancer screening for those over the age of 40), a first-aid kit, and other goodies.

If you're looking for some more all-around medical advice, head over to International Newcomers' Network's (INN) Medical Q&A session at Capital Mansion Athletic Club on Monday, Sept. 25. During the event, they will have medical professionals from Beijing's best-known international hospitals/clinics on hand to answer your questions about staying healthy and getting treated for medical conditions in Beijing (remember to bring your passport in order to register).

Did you know that Sept. 20 is "Love Your Teeth Day" in China? We didn't either, but we very much admire the sentiment – who doesn't want a bright white smile and minty fresh breath? To mark this occasion, and encourage you to care for your teeth, IDC Dental is offering free dental checkups (including x-rays) until Sept. 27. If it does turn out your teeth aren't up to scratch, then you'll get 20 percent off any subsequent treatments. Call them at 6538 8111 to book an appointment.

Still not convinced about the importance of keeping those pearlies white? Well, some studies have shown that proper oral health may reduce the risk of heart disease. Learn more at Ms. Uptown's Heart Health Through Dance and Dental workshop on Thursday, Sept. 21, 6.30-8.30pm. Chat with Dr. Wang Lu from Sunny Dental Group to learn more about how to prevent heart diseases for you and your family – for example, proper brushing and gum care routines that you can practice at home with your loved ones. After the chat session, join SALSATION® Master Trainer Natasha Bakhmat for a 60-minute class that is sure to get your heart pumping.
