Early Call for Earth Day 2017: Participate in a Clean Up Hike on April 23

Why not do something for the planet this Earth Day? Beijing Hikers are organizing a crew of hikers to go out and clean up a popular hiking trail at the Jiankou Great Wall on April 23.

READ: Beijing Hiking: Run to the Hills

The Jiankou Great Wall is found in the hills of north Beijing, and is popular with hikers and other visitors because of the incredible views it provides of the surrounding forests and rolling hills. Unfortunately, the visitors that come through here don't usually take the time to clean up after themselves, leaving the route spoiled with trash.

As part of the hike, members walk the route and clean up along the way (beware, some parts of this section of the wall are quite steep and slippery), carrying the trash down and out of the site. There'll be snacks, drinks, and a pizza party after the hike thrown by co-organizers Gung Ho Pizza at their courtyard nearby the wall.

The hike cost is still to be confirmed (will depend on the number of sign-ups and potential sponsorship), and the bus will leave from the Lido Hotel Starbucks at 8am. To sign up or if you have any questions, get in touch with Beijing Hikers at (reservations@beijinghikers.com).

Here's a little more information about the clean up.

We're running this hike at cost, and with some sponsorship we estimate it will cost about 150-200 RMB per person. We'll confirm that before the day of the hike. That cost covers the transportation, entry tickets, water, garbage bags and gloves, and a local guide who'll be with us as a local representative.

Hike info

The Jiankou Great Wall is found in the hills north of Beijing—a location that is popular with hikers and casual visitors because of the superb views of the Great Wall running up and down steep ridgelines

Unfortunately, both hikers and casual visitors are not always conscientious about cleaning up after themselves. The Great Wall on the west side of Jiankouhas been somewhat spoiled by the buildup of trash – plastic bottles, cans, tissues, noodle wrappers, and worse.

In the spirit of Earth Day we're going to head out and clean up as much as we can, with the following plan:

  1. Hike up to the wall, keeping an eye out for things to pick up
  2. Walk along the Great Wall, stopping to clean up where it's messy. Note: some sections steep and slippery.
  3. Carry out all the bags we'll fill with rubbish
  4. Reward yourself for the hard work with snacks and drinks after the hike, with us picking up the tab

As well as clearing trash off the Great Wall, we'll be setting an example for other hikers we see on the trail.

Trash we’ll be collecting

  • Any plastic
  • Any metal without sharp edges
  • Cigarette butts
  • Orange peels (Even though they come from fruit, these peels do not break down quickly!)
  • Whatever you feel comfortable removing that was left by someone else

What to bring

  • Warm clothes, just in case
  • Food and drinks – Beijing Hikers will NOT be providing any on this hike besides water!
  • Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots

We’ll provide

  • Water
  • Garbage bags
  • Plastic gloves
  • Transportation to/from
