Beijing Besieged by Waste Screening
Green Drinks Beijing and the Beijing Energy Network team up to screen a new documentary by photographer and director Wang Jiu-liang. The documentary Besieged By Waste looks at how China’s new economic success has created mountains of waste, and at the people who live and work with the consequences. The film is in Chinese with English subtitles and a panel discussion will follow the screening. 7.30pm. Free. The Bookworm

6th Annual WOW Awards
“Glass ceilings” should not exist and gender discrimination is not only harmful to a person’s self-confidence but also causes economic losses.Victims of gender discrimination lose motivation and morale necessary to perform their jobs effectively leading to a loss in productivity.

Murder in the Lucky Holiday Hotel: A Talk by Carrie Gracie, BBC China Editor
The Beijing International Society organizes a talk by Carrie Gracie, BBC China Editor, entitled Murder in the Lucky Holiday Hotel: The Death of Neil Heywood Revisited. Gracie will discuss the making of her current five-part podcast and radio series Murder in the Lucky Holiday Hotel, which investigates the tangled tale of business, politics, and crime which led to the death of businessman Neil Heywood in a Chongqing hotel room in 2011, and charts the way the sensational exposure of the murder changed the course of Chinese politics. The Dowager and the Dynasty: A Walk and Discussion at the Summer Palace
The Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) was one of the most notorious figures of modern Chinese history. For nearly a half century, she used her cunning and connections to rule China from behind the throne. Even today, many still blame her for her part in the collapse of China's Qing dynasty, a role encapsulated by her decision to spend money on an elaborate pleasure garden at a time China faced grave threats from without and within. But the real story of the Empress Dowager Cixi – and the Summer Palace she built – is more complicated. As we stroll along the shoreline and hillsides of her magnificent creation, we will discuss the life and legacy of this fascinating historical figure. RMB 300, RMB 260 (members). 1-4pm.
