The Ship Has Sailed: Bon Voyage to ShopWeShip.com

Expats who rely on the material comforts of home may be disheartened to hear that ShopWeShip.com, previously known as Dong-Xi.com, has just announced that it will soon be discontinuing its services.

ShopWeShip.com was first established to give Chinese residents access to e-commerce sites that only shipped to US billing addresses. Back then, our options were few – we could hardly find quality Western food around town, let alone chic clothes from mid- to high-end retailers.

Founder William Heathershaw wrote: “After being in service for more than two years, we have decided it is time to discontinue our services. We appreciate your dedication to our company, and we hope we have been able to bring home a little closer to you. If you currently have items being delivered to the US warehouse, or if there are items at the warehouse, we will complete all orders and deliver to you as promised. Please note that all items received at the US warehouse after February 10 will be returned to the sender.”

No word on the specific reasons behind the shutdown, though we’d venture to say it’s on account of the growing number of e-shops offering international shipping. Many of our favorite brands from home now ship directly to Beijing, a list we expect will only expand in coming months.

Don't freak out just yet – you still have plenty of alternatives. Click here and here for our most recent lists of online shopping sites. Or, per the advice of Mr. Heathershaw: “To find other companies that provide similar services as ShopWeShip, you may search online for ‘package forwarding’. The largest company in the industry is MyUS.com.”

Why do you say it was a scam? Any examples of how it was such?

Another foreign website "business" shut-down due to nobody falling for their bullsh*t scam. Good riddance to another creep in Beijing.

Here's a reshipping company in the US:

www.transparcel.com

And one from Europe (Germany):

www.8europe.com

There are several more - ask your Chinese friends if they 海淘 (Taobao from overseas).

There are several reshipping companies that cater specifically to Chinese consumers and their fees are much lower than what this and other "western/expat" reshippers charge. The cheapest one I know of charges $4/lb with a 2lb minimum charge per shipment (you can combine packages into a single shipment for no extra charge), and you get your stuff within 1 or 2 weeks. This also happens to be less than what USPS charges for shipping parcels to China, so it's a fantastic deal. The downside is that these Chinese reshippers don't have English websites/service.

I use these people: http://www.boxvoyage.com/

You pay US$13 and $3 for extra parcels they can consolidate, as well as the cost price of the postage you choose.

They are super reliable and communicate well. They also go above and beyond the call of duty: when my box of stuff got Return-to-Sendered (thanks China Post), they resent it to me and even paid the postage themselves.

Also, if you have an Australian bank account you pay even less fees.
